Selena Gomez was at the Ischia Film and Music Festival in Italy this week, doing I’m not sure what—but man oh man, I LOVE her hairstyle.
Now, I recognize that it won’t be to everyone’s taste… but I think this off-the-face look could be on its way back. From where, I’m not exactly sure. Someone help me place the era here? I feel like it’s probably the late ’60s/early ’70s, in a glam-meets-hippie kind of way. It’s very movie star-ish, no?
And we’ve seen it pretty recently, at the Golden Globes, on Jessica Chastain. Didn’t love it so much there, I think because it was trying to be more glam than hippie. Whereas Selena Gomez, with the straight lengths, nude makeup and long dress, gets the balance exactly right.
Could there be a more perfect way to wear your hair off your face for summer?! Nope, probably not. And this way, you get to keep your length at the back.
Here’s the head to toe:
Selena is wearing the Drawcord Dress from L’Agence, by the way. I’m INTO it. Although I don’t know about going sans bra.
Anyway, the idea is to pair the hair with a suitably dramatic outfit, so that the whole look makes sense. I don’t think this would work with a button-down and khakis, if you know what I’m saying.
Here’s the side view:
Getting this look is all about the backcombing. After blowing dry straight and running a flat iron through the lengths, you want to use a paddle brush to backcomb all around the crown. My pick is always the Mason Pearson:
And a little Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray never hurt anyone either (spray it just before you do the backcombing):
Make sure to leave the hair that will be visible smooth. Once you’ve got sufficient volume, use the brush to shape the front area, brushing it all back and away from the face. Mist with hairspray to set. L’Oréal Elnett is a hairstylist favourite:
For makeup, I think it works better all soft and natural—it would be too much to do a bold lip or eye. I love Selena’s glowy skin, which you could mimic with my new bronzer obsession, Giorgio Armani Maestro Liquid Summer Bronzer SPF 15. (Act fast, since it’s limited edition!)
A slick of lip gloss, naturally full brows and some flirty lashes complete the look. Do you love this as much as I do?
